"The Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women" was established in 1968, in memory of the late philanthropist ThiruN.R.K.K.Rajaratnam, whose remarkable achievements in the fields of business and industry has earned him an indelible niche in the annals of Sivakasi. Thiru Rajaratnam's matchless genius and tireless energy gave rise to the "The Standard Group of Industries". The late Thiru K.A.A. Sankaralingam Nadar and Thiru K.A.A. Arunachalam Nadar and Thiru A. Chelladurai Nadar were the founder architects and stalwarts of his edifice of learning. They established"The Standard Fireworks Educational Charities Trust" that paved the way for the higher education and intellectual upliftment of rural women in and around Sivakasi. It was their vision to liberate the rural women from their socio, economic and cultural constraints by intellectually equipping them to confront the challenges of everyday life. During the prolific tenure of the First Trustee and Educationist Thiru.Yennarkay R. Ravindran – a worthy son of a noble father- the college witnessed great growth, both in terms of infrastructure and the introduction of an array of new programmes that have transformed young women into successful career women. Under the headship of the esteemed President Tmt.Thilagavathi Ravindran, the present Management Committee continues to liberally finance, monitor and endorse every step forward, initiated by this prestigious institution.
"The Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women" was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Sri Meenakshi Sundaram, on 27th Jan. 1968. The College was initially housed in a modest building belonging to the "The Standard Group of Industries". The Trust has been renamed as "The Standard Fireworks Charities" in Dec. 1984. The College is located in a 25-acre campus that is vast and lush with an array of trees, a mix of scenic beauty & delights on the Sivakasi -Thiruthangal Road, from 1977 onwards. Academics being the gateway to economic independence, social mobility and character refinement, The Standard Fireworks Rajaratnam College for Women has maintained its stead as a premier institution, committed to the empowerment of rural women. Over the past five decades, our college has played a stellar role in touching and shaping the lives of young women who have contributed to society as successful career women and responsible citizens.
The College is affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University. SFRC has ploughed ahead through the rugged rural terrain and has spearheaded the challenge of intellectually empowering the young women of this rural vicinity and continues unfalteringly in its pursuit towards excellence. SFRC brims with pride at the significant milestones erected along the way - ever since its inception in 1968.
In 1969, UG courses were introduced followed by PG courses in 1980. The plea and demand from the student community for more courses had led to the launching of the Self-financed courses in the year 1993. The National Assessment & Accreditation Council of Bangalore, crowned SFRC with Five Star Status in 2002, followed by the renewed award of ‘A’ Grade in Sep. 2008. In the Third Cycle of Accreditation, SFRC has again been awarded ‘A’ Grade in 2014.
The advent of autonomy in the academic year 2005 has given us the freedom to innovate, improve and enhance our academic caliber. We aspire to establish a system of Quality Assurance which would on a continuous basis evaluate and monitor the quality of education. This staunch commitment to quality is evident in the progressive stages of the journey of the institution and in the reception and retention of autonomy status. To begin with, the College was declared autonomous in 2005 for a period ranging from 2005 to 2012, ensued by an extension for a second term of 5 years from 2012 to 2017. Our College has been granted Extension of Autonomous Status by UGC for a period of 5 years from 2017-2022.
The teaching-learning process that imparts knowledge has constantly evolved which has ultimately lead to its recognition as a College with Potential for Excellenceon 16th September 2011 by UGC. The UGC has extended the status of College with Potential for Excellence for the next phase of five years from 2017-2018 to 2021-2022 and our college has been the fortunate recipient of 1.25 Crores.
In the year 2015, our college has been recognized as a DST member to strengthen the research facilities in all Science departments of the college.
Every challenge has been innovatively handled, toembark towards progression which has steered the institution to scale greater heights. Every year, SFRC witnesses the blossoming of the young women of this township into young fledglings geared to soar new horizons, armed with the requisite mettle and confidence to play their unique role and contribute their individual mite to the welfare of society and the nation. Today, SFRC stands as a dynamic testimony for its industrious perseverance, meritorious achievements and devoted service towards the cause of higher education. In the academic year 2017-18, the college had crossed its glorious Golden Jubilee milestone and the laudable tradition of women empowerment still continues. Under UGC – PARAMARSH scheme for mentoring NAAC Accreditation Aspirant Institutions, our college has been approved as Mentor Institution in the academic year 2019-2020. An MOU has been signed with the mentee institutions to train the faculty members on accreditation process, to share knowledge, information and resources and to enable Staff Development/Staff Exchange programmes on a mutually agreeable conditions. Several Online Faculty Development Programmes and Hands on training sessions were organized to that effect. As a recognition for all our green initiatives, R. World Institutional Ranking has awarded our Institution with the GOLD BAND and has given us the 50th rank among all the other Institutions of our country. SFRC is a member of MOE Innovation Cell, Ministry of Education. During the academic year 2021-22 SFRC received Three Star Status from the MOE Innovation Cell. Our Institution strongly believes in responsible living and is working towards developing a green campus culture by initiating new ventures like Botanical Garden, Zodiac Garden and Miyawaki Forest.
